Me, Greg & Monterey

Waking up at 3am, I packed my gear, strapped down the kayak and headed to the shop to meet Greg. After we transferred all the gear and kayaks into his truck, we gassed up, and began the 3hr drive to Monterey. Between the 2 of us, neither had been diving in over 3 months. We were anxious to dive in Monterey’s clear water and hopefully bring back stringers full of fish.

Conditions were supposed to be quite decent; less than 5 knots of wind, NW swell of 5ft, and less than 2ft of wind waves. We drove around the coast for a solid hour trying to decide on which location to launch from. Finally, the always fun to dive Stillwater Cove became our dive spot for this day. After scouting our previous well producing spots for more than 3 hrs we were dumbfounded by what we “didn’t” see. Neither of us saw any fish at all! No lings, no blues, no blacks, nothing! Confused and slightly annoyed we decided to put away the spearguns and focus on depth training. After getting cold and tired we decided to call it a day and head back to the beach. Exhausted, skunked, but thankful, we began the trek back home, somehow managing to hit traffic along the entire route. No fish this time, but any day in the water is better than a day in class….
