Hot Reads! Stone Shot & Explosive Crossroads

Stone Shot & Explosive Crossroads detail Luke Dodge’s journey from novice diver to experienced big-game spearfisher. Filled with action, turmoil, diving and conquering massive fish these books will keep divers turning the pages and itching to get back in the water.

See both Stone Shot & Explosive Crossroads under “books” on freediveshop.com or picassoamerica.com.

Goldblatt doesn’t just research and report a fictional story of our beloved sport – he is an experienced and knowledgeable diver.
His diving credentials: a world traveler seeking exciting dives like the rest of us, veteran commercial/charter boat captain, and for those who require a college degree he has that as well – B.S. in Fisheries and Business from Humboldt State University (yes, a CA native). He currently lives in Panama.

Hitting the Sonoma Coast

Waking up at 6am Joe Magoto and I packed our car and headed to the Sonoma Coast for a quick dip in the chilly water. We decided to dive the well known and quite popular Fisk Mill Cove for a quick limit of Abalone, and maybe a few fish. Joe and myself needed to be in and out of the water with a limit of ab, and ideally some fish within 2 hrs. We both had previous commitments that required us to be back in Sacramento by early afternoon.

The water was a face numbing 50.2 º with hardly any swell, and a hazy 8-10ft visibility. We left the kayaks at home this time, and opted for our tried and true ab boards. Within the first hour we had our limits and Joe nailed a really nice greenling. I saw a baby ling, but other than that there was nothing swimming around that was worth shooting. After the dive we picked some mussels and called it a day. Tired, cold, sleepy and extremely hungry, we booked it back home. A great dive with a friend is always better than a day in class….

Me, Greg & Monterey

Waking up at 3am, I packed my gear, strapped down the kayak and headed to the shop to meet Greg. After we transferred all the gear and kayaks into his truck, we gassed up, and began the 3hr drive to Monterey. Between the 2 of us, neither had been diving in over 3 months. We were anxious to dive in Monterey’s clear water and hopefully bring back stringers full of fish.

Conditions were supposed to be quite decent; less than 5 knots of wind, NW swell of 5ft, and less than 2ft of wind waves. We drove around the coast for a solid hour trying to decide on which location to launch from. Finally, the always fun to dive Stillwater Cove became our dive spot for this day. After scouting our previous well producing spots for more than 3 hrs we were dumbfounded by what we “didn’t” see. Neither of us saw any fish at all! No lings, no blues, no blacks, nothing! Confused and slightly annoyed we decided to put away the spearguns and focus on depth training. After getting cold and tired we decided to call it a day and head back to the beach. Exhausted, skunked, but thankful, we began the trek back home, somehow managing to hit traffic along the entire route. No fish this time, but any day in the water is better than a day in class….
